Whole Body Cryotherapy for Depression & Anxiety

In simple terms, Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) is the modern version of traditional ice baths that are often prescribed for joint pain and inflammation. This form of treatment works by exposing one’s body to extremely low temperatures, which could go as low as over negative 94°C. WBC has been known to help with the general physical health; however, recent studies suggest that it can also help relieve the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Depression and anxiety are not the same; however, these conditions tend to occur together. Recently, these two conditions have been associated with chronic systemic levels of inflammation, accompanied by increased oxidative stress. And, as we’ve discussed earlier, The main purpose of whole body cryotherapy is to reduce systematic inflammation. The basic idea behind the effects on one’s mental health is that when the body is exposed to such extreme low temperatures, it floods the brain with endorphins, improving your mood. In addition, the cold shock triggers the body’s fight or flight response. This causes vasoconstriction in the body, which pulls blood from extremities back into the core. When this happens, it gives the body the opportunity to enrich blood with oxygen and beneficial enzymes and nutrients. When the body warms back, the enriched blood flows back through the body, boosting the overall feelings of health and wellness.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

One single session of whole body cryotherapy, about 2-3 minutes, may not cure depression or anxiety but it can greatly manage the symptoms. The Hamilton’s depression and anxiety rating scales did a study that showed that, significant improvements in symptoms were seen in patients who underwent 15 daily WBC treatments over the course of three weeks.

Benefits of Using Whole Body Cryotherapy for Depression & Anxiety
